Vancouver (August 14, 2010)

  • The BC Cancer Foundation announced today that 1,100 participants raised over $2.4 million in the seventh annual Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™. In the past six years the Weekend events have enabled the Foundation to invest over $16 million in breast and gynecologic cancer research and programs at the BC Cancer Agency. The eighth annual Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers is already planned for August 13-14, 2011.
  • After an uplifting Opening Ceremonies at UBC’s Thunderbird Sports Fields, Walkers set off on the first 30 km of the scenic walk through the city. Tonight they will camp in a tent city set up at UBC to rest and prepare for another 30 km on Sunday. Their weekend journey ends Sunday at 3:30 p.m. with an emotional Closing Ceremonies back at UBC Thunderbird Sports Fields. Family, friends, and supporters are invited to greet and cheer on the Walkers as they make their way to the finish.
  • The millions of dollars raised through The Weekend over the past six years have played a crucial role in many projects at BC Cancer Agency, including funding a landmark discovery in breast cancer by BC Cancer Agency scientists who decoded the genetic development of a patient’s breast cancer tumour, revealing how the cancer began and spread.
  • The BC Cancer Foundation gratefully acknowledges event sponsors: Shoppers Drug Mart, Global BC, 103.5 QM/FM, the Beat 94.5, Royale, Dasani, Canada Dry, Red Truck Beer, and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly.

  1. "A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone participating in this year’s Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers," said BC Cancer Foundation President and CEO Douglas Nelson. "Without the generous and continued support of our Walkers and their donors, BC Cancer agency researchers and clinicians could not be making the significant advancements in breast and women’s cancers research and treatment that have been made throughout B.C. We hope everyone will help us make next year’s event just as successful by registering now for the 2011 Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancer."
  2. "The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers is a fantastic way to get the entire community involved in an important cause," says Douglas Nelson, President and CEO of BC Cancer Foundation. "I’m overwhelmed by our Walkers’ fundraising efforts and I can’t wait to announce the total dollars they have raised when we begin this unforgettable journey Saturday morning through the streets of Vancouver."
  3. "Thanks to the support of Weekend walkers and their donors, BC Cancer Agency researchers and clinicians can continue to make life-saving advances in breast and women’s cancers," said Agency oncologist and ovarian cancer researcher Dr. Jessica McAlpine. "Funds raised through the past six Weekend events have enabled us to expand research across the province, as well as support clinical research trials that can lead to more effective treatments and provide our patients with a better quality of life."
  4. "I am so excited to be taking part in this year’s Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers," said four-time walker Yumi White. "As someone who has battled both cervical and breast cancer, the expanded Weekend to include all women's cancers is amazing. Creating awareness about the disease and raising funds for research happening right here in B.C. is something that is really important to me. I’m proud to be a part of this event."
